If the thought of getting back into exercise after having a baby makes you feel a little anxious, you’re not alone. When speaking with new mums who have just joined YMF, we often hear that their first class was quite daunting, not knowing how they would cope with exercise after taking such a long break (and for some, starting exercise for the first time ever). We’ve all been there before, even the trainers have had kids of their own and have had to start back after becoming a new mum. So, if you’re anything like us and a little freaked out, don’t worry, it’s totally valid! Here are our top 3 tips when starting back with exercise after having kids:

1. Work At Your Own Pace

When you’re just starting out, work at your own pace. Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing and focus on yourself. Keep in mind that everyone is at different fitness levels, so don’t try to keep up with the person next to you (they might have been exercising for years already).

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Alternatives

You might not be able to do every exercise as it’s demonstrated and that’s ok. There are always progressions with every exercise so it’s smarter to start with a modified version that you can manage and gradually work your way up, rather than risk injuring yourself by doing an exercise that is too advanced for your current capabilities.

3. Have realistic expectations of your fitness levels.

Even if you used to exercise before having kids, any break from exercise will take you backwards and you will have to work your fitness levels back up again. We know it sucks, especially when you know what you were capable of doing before, but your body goes through immense change after having a baby so you need to stay focused on your new fitness journey and avoid comparing yourself to what you could do previously.

Starting out may be a little bit scary, but don’t let that stop you because it doesn’t take long to get back into the groove of things. Start with our free 7 day trial – book in and give it a go, and before you know it, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t start sooner! Click here to get started.
