Confessions of a Personal Trainer

I have been a personal trainer for almost 13 years. You know me as the founder and head trainer of Yummy Mummy Fitness, but here’s a few things you may not know about me…

#1: Growing up I was not a sporty or athletic kid at all, I avoided sports carnivals as much as I could and whenever I did compete, I would be in the lowest division! Instead, my ‘sport’ of choice was dancing. I started dancing at a very young age and continued to do it all through high school, and all the way until I had kids. In my early 20’s I was right into hip hop dancing – performing at different events, back up dancing for various artists and even featured in a film clip.

#2: I first started exercising after I finished high school (15 years ago!). My best friend and I started training at a gym together doing taebo classes (anyone remember that fad?) and aerobics. Soon after we decided to get serious and started a weights based program with a personal trainer, and this set the foundation of my fitness training. Since then I’ve done many different forms of training – martial art, boxing, swimming, crossfit, yoga, pilates, and bootcamp. Unfortunately, running/cardio is not my strong suit! I have to work really hard to keep up my cardio fitness, so contrary to popular belief, not all personal trainers are naturally fit. Some of us have to work for it, just like everyone else.

#3: I got into personal training as a career after it was suggested to me by one of my trainers who said the fitness course was really fun, so my best friend and I enrolled in our Certificate 4 in Fitness together and became qualified!

#4: My favourite food is Italian – pizza and pasta! And like most women, I love chocolate and desserts! Not something you might be used to hearing from a personal trainer, but it is true, I am human just like all of you.

#5: I aim to do 4-5 training sessions per week. This does not always happen every week. Just like most of us, I am a busy mum and sometimes life just gets in the way. I love training in a group and actually find it really challenging to train on my own.

#6: We all have parts of our bodies we aren’t happy with right? Yes, personal trainers do too. For me, it’s my tummy area. And unfortunately, like many of us, I always lose fat from everywhere else other than my biggest problem area!

#7: I am not just about health and fitness. Most people think personal trainers live and breathe fitness, and although it is a major part of my life, I am also about family, friends, adventures, food, relaxing, music, movies, trying new restaurants, travel, and the list goes on. I’m a big believer in having a balanced life.

I wanted to share this with you because I wanted you to know that I am just like you, I share the same struggles as any other mum out there. But I believe this is to my advantage because I can relate to your #mumlife, as I am living it too.
