How To Have Your Cake And Lose Weight Too

We believe that diets and restrictions don’t work, and only set you up to fail. The first problem with diets is that it often restricts certain food groups, and quite often it will be your favourite foods that are off limits. The second problem with diets is that it is very difficult to maintain for the long term. Sure, you may be able to stick it out for a 6-8 week challenge, but what happens after that? As soon as you’re done with the challenge, it’s quite easy to just slip back into old habits and the first thing on your mind is that block of chocolate you’ve been craving so much. This is why we love the 80/20 rule! The 80/20 rule is what makes it possible to have your cake and lose weight too! Yes, it is possible to eat all the foods you love and still lead a healthy lifestyle. Here’s how the 80/20 rule works…
Eat healthy 80% of the time and allow yourself to indulge 20% of the time.
If we break it down and do the math of this 80:20 rule, here’s what it looks like… In one week we eat 21 main meals, if we apply the 80:20 rule to this that would mean any 4 of our main meals each week can be our favourite foods. As for morning and afternoon snacks, we have 14 per week, allowing us 3 of those snacks to be our favourite treats.
The 80/20 rule is a realistic healthy habit that you can keep up for the rest of your life. You are still eating nutritious, healthy food for the majority of the week, but the 20% allows for some leniency over the weekend or when you have social events on.
An important factor to consider when applying this 80/20 rule is portion control! The 80/20 rule will only work if you stick within reasonable portion sizes for your body size and activity levels, especially if you are trying to lose weight. Also be sensible with your 20% food choices, e.g. 4 takeaway fast food meals per week does not belong in any healthy diet! Keep that in mind!
